Real San Jose Soccer Club

The 2026 season has come to an end, and there is no way to describe it other than disappointing.

After twenty seasons, Real San Jose experienced the most difficult year in club history. The results on the field fell well below the standards we have set for ourselves, and as a club we must honestly acknowledge that.

Professional standards require commitment, preparation, accountability, and consistency. This season showed us that we fell short in those areas.

The responsibility for rebuilding begins now.

Over the coming months, the club will evaluate every aspect of its operation as we prepare for the 2027 NPSL season. Our goal is not simply to improve our record, but to rebuild a culture that reflects the values Real San Jose was founded on nearly twenty years ago.

As part of that process, the club will not participate in the 2027 U.S. Open Cup qualifying competition. We believe our resources are better invested in strengthening our roster, improving our organization, and building a team capable of competing at the level our supporters expect.

Open tryouts for the 2027 season will be announced in early 2027. Every roster position will be earned.

To our supporters, sponsors, volunteers, players, and everyone who has stood behind Real San Jose over the past twenty seasons, thank you. Difficult seasons do not define a club. How a club responds to them does.

The work begins today.

Real San Jose opened the 2018 UPSL Fall season with a goalless draw against JASA on April 16 at PAL Stadium.

"Difficult home opener against last years conference finalist. A game where we stood defensively very well. The whole team stood strong and acted as one block. Danny Corral set the tone very early in the game with a tackle that showed that the team came to fight. I am very pleased with the result seeing where we are in the process. We had some breaks that we need to finish better. We had chances and JASA had chances, overall I believe that a draw was the natural outcome. This game was a great start in the season and I hope we can pick up where we left next game," said RSJ Coach Markus Kothner.

To say that Corral had an impact in his RSJ debut is an understatement because when he went off injured with ten minutes remaining JASA found their best chances to score. Then another injury, this time an Eddie Guerro hamstring, caused RSJ to play a man short for the final few minutes. But in the end, the RSJ defense led by Corral's center back partner Nick Vargas and goalkeeper Jonathan Arellano held on to earn a difficult point.

Notes:

Luis Avalos captained RSJ and turned in an expressive performance in midfield.

Jonathan Arellano had a successful return to the RSJ lineup since being injured midway through the spring season by recording the shutout.

Defender Justin Fathali and defensive midfielder Daveed Ettefagh both played a Leigh High School and made their RSJ debuts against JASA. Both turned in strong defensive performances in the shutout.

RSJ gets a week off before returning to UPSL action on September 29th when they travel to play the Oakland Stompers.

Real San Jose defeated JASA from Redwood City by the score of 4 to 3 in an exciting UPSL regular-season match at PAL Stadium on May 16.

The match seemed like it was going to be a blowout as Real San Jose was up 3-0 after 23 minutes. In the second minute, RSJ midfielder Angel Heredia played a perfect ball to the chest of Jonathan Garcia who smashed the ball into the back of the net. Just a minutes later Garcia crossed the ball to Bora Moya and RSJ was now up to zero after 10 minutes. Garcia then scored from the penalty spot and RSJ was off to the 3-0 lead. It was quite a start for Garcia who was making his Real San Jose debut.

JASA sent the message that they were not going away and pulled a goal back in the 29th minute from the penalty spot.

And the Redwood City struck again in the 52nd minute which would be the first of three goals scored in a seven-minute span.

In the 55th minute Chicago scored off a corner kick from Hoang Pham. RSJ had little chance to sit on a two-goal lead as JASA made it a one-goal game in the 59th minute.

No doubt seven goals in the first 60 minutes was exciting. The final 30 just as exciting and perhaps more stressful as both teams created, then missed good opportunities. In the end, it was the RSJ defense that survived.

Real San Jose twice came back from being a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw at Chico Rangers on May 5, 2018. The result keeps RSJ unbeaten through five games to start the 2018 UPSL season.

Chico came out strong and scored through a corner kick just two minutes into the match. It seemed as if the RSJ defenders stopped play as a header spun off the top of the bar and Chico player crossed the ball in for a wide-open shooter.

"The ball went out to play and we all stopped. Their guy still played it and they scored. We complained but the referee said we should play through the whistle, I don't understand how the AR missed it," said RSJ goalkeeper Jonathan Arellano.

Chico continue to apply pressure as San Jose were still trying to find their form. After about 20 minutes, they did.

RSJ started creating some nice chances for themselves and narrowly missing. Finally, Capt. Angel Heredia went coast-to-coast combining passes with goalkeeper Arellano, Facundo Benitez and Luis Avalos. At the end of the play it was some nifty combination passing between Heredia and Avalos that led to the tying goal. Avalos provided Borja Moya with the defense splitting pass and Borja beat the keeper for his third goal of the season. The referee blew for halftime just after the following kickoff.

Chico began the second half as they did the first and kept RSJ pinned back looking for counterattacks. Chico seem to get the break they were looking for when defender Hoang Pham was called for tripping in the penalty box. However, the Chico penalty taker shot the ball over the goal.

The home team did get the break they were looking for in the 69th minute as they took the lead once again. This time they took full advantage of attacking the RSJ right side crossed to a wide-open striker who had no problem finding the net.

RSJ once again were behind and pushing forward. Finally, in 82nd minute, another series of touches found in attacking player wide-open. Omar Sanchez played the ball from the midfield line toward Pham who "dummied" the ball for Mike Tomsic. Tomsic combined with Moya and found himself which is the goalkeeper to beat. And he did sliding the ball just inside the back post.

Both sides pushed hard for the game-winner but in the end the match finished in a well played draw.
